12/2/2023 0 Comments Contra rebirth thank youWeapons and modules can be added to the ship, and while there isn’t a lot of space exploration in the Trek vein, there certainly is a lot of Star Wars-style galactic politics (minus the Gungans, of course). It’s got space battles, it’s got experience points, and it’s got crew members with stats. Platinum Games’ Infinite Space is a true revival of the ’80s glory days, and then some. Since then, however, there have been very, very few space RPGs to speak of… and no, space sims don’t count. Fans of Star Wars could explore cosmic intrigue and even a little bit of “space magic” (much like the Force) in Sentinel Worlds and its spiritual successor, Hard Nova. Fans of Star Trek could immerse themselves in StarFlight and StarFlight 2: Trade Routes of the Cloud Nebula, games that allowed players to seek out new life and new civilizations. In the heyday of the 1980s, the space RPG enjoyed a terrific run, mostly thanks to the then-fledgling Electronic Arts. It’s not often that a game is a revival of an entire genre, but that’s exactly what DS’s Infinite Space is. Most “rebirth” games involve the revival of an IP. As to which are our favorites? We get into just that, below… Heck, full-on rebirths of genres and sub-genres that have been missing from the scene are great to see as well.Īnd from Metroid Prime to Mega Man 9, we’ve seen plenty of great rebirths in the last couple console generations. It still has a place in my 3DS game case, and certainly always will.We all love new IPs, but doesn’t it feel good when nostalgia kicks in? Maybe there’s a gameplay mechanic that was lost to time and now we get to rediscover it again. Contra 4 is an excellent game that doesn’t get nearly the amount of attention it should. I can only hope if there’s a Contra V, it will continue in this direction.Īnyway, I just wanted to extend my thanks. Hard Corps Uprising and Contra ReBirth were based more around platforming and stage obstacles and less on boss gauntlets than the series was pre-Contra 4. I think it’s positively affected what few games have been released in the series since. Contra 4 is one of the best games on the DS, and it is one of the BEST games ever. Then there’s the soundtrack which is also the best since the first game. You brought the series back to its roots and in the process pushed it forward with modern choices such as the dual screen, multiple playable characters, and excellent 2D sprite-work and backgrounds that surpass even Contra III and Hard Corps. You brought back the platforming, the obstacles, and the aggressive action I’ve wanted to return to the series since the first NES game. The level design was tight, creative (especially due to the dual screens), and, most importantly, it was fun. It was exactly the game I’ve wanted to play ever since the NES era ended. So, I say, thank you for making Contra 4. I also enjoyed the PS2 games, but they were more in the vein of Contra III and Hard Corps and not quite what I wanted from the series. The less said about the PS1 games, the better. Contra III and Hard Corps were excellent games, but they were more focused on cinematic over the top events and bosses and less on challenging level design. Operation C was fun, but it was short and only one player. Sure, Super C was a good sequel, but the platforming was lacking. Even this many years later and NES Contra is one of the best games ever. Basically a video game version of an ’80s action flick that was as intense as it was difficult, Contra always kept me coming back for more. Not only was it a top notch platformer up there with the greats, but as a shooter it’s still one of the best ever made. One of my favorite games was always the NES version of Contra. Growing up on Super Mario Bros., Mega Man, Double Dragon, and, yes, Contra.
